Sprout Out Loud! ‘Zine Launch @ Drawn & Quarterly

EM_COVER

Montréal artist-activist Emily Rose Michaud is launching the second edition of her ‘zine Pouvoir Aux Pousses! / Sprout Out Loud! tomorrow at local comics powerhouse Drawn & Quarterly. Emily established the Roerich Garden* in 2007, as part of the Sprout Out Loud! gardener’s collective.

The Roerich Garden is located on a plot of land formerly owned by a railway company, and is one of the last undeveloped green spaces in Montréal’s Mile End neighbourhood. This local community space is surprisingly biodiverse, and has been used by locals for various activities, and like other unofficial urban greenspaces on “vague terrains” worldwide, raises questions about citizen engagement, urban occupation and land use. Residents are now working with city officials to keep it as a open, green and communal space.

In the spirit of this collective guerrilla garden, I was honoured to contribute a drawing for Emily’s ‘zine; the event information is below.

*Roerich refers to Nicholas Roerich, early 20th century Russian painter, writer, philosopher and theosophist who worked to establish “pax cultura” (a culture of peace).

Pouvoir Aux Pousses! / Sprout Out Loud! zine launch + presentation + planting

DRAWN & QUARTERLY in Montreal.

Wednesday, May 22, 5 to 7 PM.

This May, Sprout Out Loud! would like to introduce and celebrate their newest issue #2 with the Montreal public: Occupy the Streets with Land Art & Guerilla Gardening, facilitated by Emily Rose Michaud.

Join us for a bilingual visual presentation on Guerilla Gardens and Land Art followed by hands-on planting.

The presentation will highlight citizen-led gardening initiatives and their ties to grassroots social movements; look at the nature of engagement as it pertains to land use and participatory democracy and re-affirm the need for the poetic, political and public when it comes to art and action. Considering our role as social and cultural pollinators at both the local and international level, simple gestures will be highlighted: ones which are inclusive, concrete, creative, inter-generational and life-affirming. When it comes to the built and natural spaces that compose our lives, this presentation will invigorate a radical re-imagining of our cities and villages and how we may (re)shape them.

Sprout Out Loud’s second issue archives the contributions of engaged artists, citizens, activists and gardeners from Canada and beyond with submissions by: Sean Martindale, Sara Torrie, Norman Nawrocki, Anne Goldenberg, Dominique Ferraton, Andrew Mckay, Kimberley Mok, Bruce Cawdron, Kendra Besanger, Matthew Bennett, Scott Duncan, Hélène Cadieux, Gelareh Saadatpajouh & Talayeh Hamidya.

This event is free & ‘zines in both languages will be available for purchase.
