It’s been said that each language encapsulates a whole universe of diverse understandings and perspectives that might not be found in other linguistic systems. To that end, we should strive to cultivate and preserve each language, each serving as a unique and multifaceted window into the human condition. Nowhere is that more important than when it comes to preserving the languages and customs of indigenous peoples around the world.
Here is one example of a documentary showcasing what’s happening in Maori culture. A renaissance of art, language, identity on one hand; and on the other hand, the impact of an institutionalized attempt to eradicate those traditional values.
